CLIMBING SHOES · MADE TO CLIMB, MADE TO LAST
The making and remaking of a climbing shoe
From lasts and rubber to resoling: how a climbing shoe takes shape, and how repair can extend its journey.
The story of a climbing shoe begins where a foot meets the wall. A small edge and a sloping surface place different demands on support and contact. Shape, materials and construction respond to those demands.
A close fit and purpose-made rubber help the foot apply force to holds. Judge fit by how the whole shoe holds the foot and feels under load. Sizing varies by brand and model; there is no universal downsizing rule, and pain is not a measure of a good fit.
FROM LAST TO SHOE
From last to finished shoe
Making a climbing shoe turns flat materials into a three-dimensional structure around the foot. The illustration below outlines the main stages; construction and assembly order vary by model. For details of specific brands and shoes, consult each brand’s published manufacturing process.
An illustrative construction study, not a factory engineering drawing. The last is a shaping tool and is removed after construction.
Last and material preparation
The last provides the form around which the shoe is shaped. Upper and rubber materials are prepared for the design. The last is a production tool, not a component left inside the shoe.
Cutting and stitching the upper
Panels are cut and stitched into the upper, preparing it for shaping.
Lasting
The upper is fitted over the last to form the shoe’s volume.
Bonding the rand and outsole
Rand and outsole components are bonded to the shoe while its shape and fit are maintained.
Finishing and inspection
The sole-to-rand edges are ground and blended, followed by a final inspection.
Shoe design also develops through use. TENAYA’s account connects its founder’s climbing experience with his background in footwear development. Turning a need on the wall into a repeatable product brings design and manufacturing into an ongoing conversation.
RUBBER & CONSTRUCTION
Rubber works with the whole shoe
The outsole compound is one part of the design. Two familiar climbing rubbers from Vibram illustrate different priorities.
CONTACT & SENSITIVITY
Vibram XS Grip 2
Emphasises friction and sensitivity. Often paired with softer shoes for close contact on slopes and smearing surfaces.

SUPPORT & EDGING
Vibram XS Edge
Emphasises support and edge retention when concentrating weight onto small footholds.
Example shoes & rubber placement
Men’s forefoot outsole
La Sportiva TC Pro外底Outsole
Men’s outsole
The men’s Instinct VS combines an XS Edge forefoot with an XS Grip 2 heel. Rubber can also vary between versions of the same shoe family; check the specific model’s original specification.
RUBBER & MIDSOLE
UNPARALLEL RH
UNPARALLEL describes the UP-Lace through the combination of an RH outsole and a stiff midsole. It is another example of rubber and internal construction working together to shape support and feel.
DIFFERENT ZONES, DIFFERENT ROLES
Different materials within one shoe
TENAYA explains that Tarifa uses different rubber formulations in different areas, responding to demands such as small edges and heel contact. An outsole compound name does not describe every rubber component in a shoe.
Brands also use their own compounds, such as SCARPA’s S72. Consider outsole thickness, midsole, overall shape and intended use alongside the compound name.
When changing compound or thickness during a resole, discuss the expected change in feel and compatibility with the existing construction.
Vibram’s official repair catalogue also lists climbing rubber sheets. It provides context for compound and thickness options; confirm current availability and suitability with the repairer.
UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURE, THEN REPAIR
Understand the original structure, then repair
The outsole wears with use, particularly around the forefoot and toe. Repairing before wear reaches the rand can limit the work required. Damage to the rand or upper makes the job more involved.
A resole involves more than choosing new rubber. Existing construction, materials and tools affect repairability. SCARPA’s repair programme connects repairable design with appropriate materials, equipment and training.
Outsole resole
When wear is mainly in the outsole, the worn rubber is replaced and its junction with the rand checked. The scope depends on the model and condition.
Toe and rand repair
A thin or damaged rand needs a separate assessment. Ask whether toe reconstruction is included and how the repair may affect fit.
Shape and overall condition
Lasts or shaping supports help control shape, but existing wear limits the result. Assess the upper, bonding and fit rather than relying on a fixed number of repairs.
La Sportiva also notes that a hole at the toe requires the rubber edge to be rebuilt before a new sole is fitted, which may affect performance. Assessing the structure that can be retained is an essential part of the repair decision.
CARE & REPAIR
Care, repair and resolers
Before sending shoes in, photograph the sole, toe, both sides and damaged areas. Include the model, size, repair history and what you hope to preserve or change. This gives the repairer a clearer starting point.
Materials and thickness
Which compound and thickness will be used, and why do they suit this shoe and its intended use?
Scope and shape
Is this an outsole resole or does the rand also need work? How will shape be supported, and has the repairer worked on this model?
Cost, turnaround and follow-up
Confirm the estimate, turnaround and follow-up process for bonding or fit concerns.
For everyday care, let shoes air-dry in a shaded, ventilated place. Avoid hot cars, direct sun and heat sources, and follow the brand’s cleaning guidance.
Making and repairing a climbing shoe share a common concern: how materials, shape and the foot work together. Understanding that relationship helps inform repair decisions as the shoe wears.
